Port Your Number – Keep Your Number When Switching Operators
You always have the right to keep your mobile number when switching operators. This is called number porting, and it is both free and straightforward. The entire process is handled by your new operator — you do not need to contact your old one.
How number porting works
- Choose your new operator — Sign up with the operator you want to move to
- Provide your current number — Your new operator will ask if you want to keep your existing number
- Your new operator handles the transfer — They contact your old operator and manage everything on your behalf
- The number moves over — This typically takes 1–3 business days
- Your old subscription is cancelled automatically — You do not need to cancel it yourself
Important things to know
Do NOT cancel your old subscription first
This is the most common mistake people make. If you cancel your subscription before the porting is complete, you risk losing your number permanently. Let your new operator handle the switch — your old subscription will be cancelled automatically once the transfer is done.
Contracts and notice periods
If you are still within a contract period, you can still port your number. However, you may need to pay an early termination fee depending on your current operator’s terms. Check the conditions with your current provider before switching.
Prepaid numbers
Numbers from prepaid cards can also be ported. Just make sure the card has not expired — an inactive prepaid number can be more difficult to transfer.
How long does porting take?
Porting typically takes 1–3 business days from the moment your new operator submits the request. During the transfer you may experience a brief service interruption — usually just a few minutes.
You will generally receive a notification from your new operator once porting is complete.
Does porting cost anything?
In Sweden, number porting is free. No operator is allowed to charge you for transferring your number. The only potential cost is an early termination fee if you are breaking a fixed-term contract with your current operator.
Summary
Switching operators while keeping your number is easy. Sign up with your new operator, indicate that you want to keep your existing number, and let them handle the rest. It costs nothing and takes just a few days.
